Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve

Fat-bike territory: a sand road up Medano Canyon beside North America's tallest dunes.

2/5
Limited riding

Fat bikes can tackle the sandy Medano Pass Primitive Road; regular bikes get about a mile.

Riding here

Great Sand Dunes is fat-bike country. Regular bikes are limited to a short dirt stretch of Medano Pass Road near the campground, but fat bikes can continue past Point of No Return up the sandy Medano Pass Primitive Road, sharing a single lane with 4x4s, and even camp in Medano Canyon. The dunes themselves are wilderness and off-limits to bikes.

Where you can ride

Regular bikes may ride the dirt section of Medano Pass Road between Piñon Flats Campground and Point of No Return (about a mile). Fat bikes may also ride the sandy Medano Pass Primitive Road beyond it, for day trips or overnight camping in Medano Canyon.

Where you can't

Bikes are not allowed on the dunefield or most mountain trails (designated wilderness, where mechanized equipment isn't permitted), or on State Highway 150 within the park, so drive your bike in.

Rides

  • Medano Pass Primitive Road

    • Fat bike
    • Deep sand
    • Hard

A sandy single-lane road up Medano Canyon. Rideability depends on the sand: very soft, dry sand may stop you.

Start: Point of No Return, beyond Piñon Flats Campground

When to go

Late spring and fall; summer sand gets very hot and very soft. Check road conditions first.

Safety

You share a single lane with 4WD vehicles, some moving fast through sand; listen and watch for traffic.

E-bikes

The park's own bicycling page doesn't spell out e-bike rules. Under the NPS e-bike rule (36 CFR 4.30), an e-bike with working pedals and a motor under 750 watts is generally allowed where regular bikes are, and riding on the motor alone is barred anywhere cars can't go. Parks can restrict them, so confirm with the park before you bring one.

Fees

Arriving by bike, you pay the park's individual (per-person) entrance fee, normally valid for 7 days, or ride in on an annual or America the Beautiful pass. Amounts change, so check the park's Fees & Passes page.
