Leave the bike at home

Bikes are allowed only on the tiny road areas at Rock Harbor and Windigo; about 99% of the island is wilderness.

Riding here

Isle Royale is a roadless island in Lake Superior, reached by ferry or seaplane. Bikes can be ridden only on the short roads in the developed areas at Rock Harbor and Windigo; trails, campgrounds and wilderness (about 99% of the park) are off-limits. Bikes must be left at public racks, so it's a hiking trip.

Getting there: Ferry or seaplane from Houghton or Copper Harbor (MI) or Grand Portage (MN); transport needs advance reservations and may charge extra for bikes.

Where you can ride

Park roads in the developed areas of Rock Harbor and Windigo, and the Houghton parking areas.

Where you can't

No bikes on trails, in campgrounds or in wilderness (about 99% of the park). Bikes must be stored at the public racks in Rock Harbor or Windigo.

When to go

Not a cycling destination.

E-bikes

Not applicable beyond the developed areas.

Fees

Arriving by bike, you pay the park's individual (per-person) entrance fee, normally valid for 7 days, or ride in on an annual or America the Beautiful pass. Amounts change, so check the park's Fees & Passes page.

Sources

Checked November 2026 against these sources. Rules, closures and fees change; confirm with the park before you ride.
