Joshua Tree National Park

Dirt roads through Joshua tree forests and boulder piles, best in winter.

3/5
Worth bringing a bike

Quiet backcountry dirt roads among the Joshua trees, but no trails, no bike lanes and serious heat.

Riding here

Joshua Tree's paved roads are busy and shoulderless, so cyclists head for the dirt. Backcountry roads in Queen Valley and beyond see far less traffic and wind among Joshua trees and granite boulders. Bike racks at the Wall Street Mill trailhead and Echo T let you lock up and hike, and Ryan Campground keeps sites for cyclists.

Where you can ride

Bikes are limited to roads open to vehicles, paved and dirt. The park recommends backcountry roads, which carry less traffic.

Where you can't

No bikes on trails.

Safety

Carry at least a gallon of water per person per day (two for long or uphill trips). Ryan Campground has no water; fill up at the West Entrance or park headquarters. Watch for potholes and for RVs with wide mirrors. Wear reflective clothing after dark.

E-bikes

The park's own bicycling page doesn't spell out e-bike rules. Under the NPS e-bike rule (36 CFR 4.30), an e-bike with working pedals and a motor under 750 watts is generally allowed where regular bikes are, and riding on the motor alone is barred anywhere cars can't go. Parks can restrict them, so confirm with the park before you bring one.

Fees

Arriving by bike, you pay the park's individual (per-person) entrance fee, normally valid for 7 days, or ride in on an annual or America the Beautiful pass. Amounts change, so check the park's Fees & Passes page. Ryan Campground has three bicycle sites (32A, B and C) at $5 a night.
