Shenandoah National Park

105 miles of Blue Ridge ridgetop on Skyline Drive.

4/5
Great riding

Skyline Drive is 105 miles of ridgetop road with a 35 mph limit and big climbs, one of the East's classic rides.

Riding here

Skyline Drive runs the full length of Shenandoah along the crest of the Blue Ridge, 105 miles of rolling, climbing road with overlooks every few miles and a low speed limit. It's one of the East's great road rides, done as a multi-day tour or in sections. Fall color brings heavy traffic, so ride early or midweek.

Where you can ride

Mountain, road and e-bikes may ride Skyline Drive and all paved park areas, plus about a mile of Rapidan Fire Road in the Big Meadows area (a sign marks the turnaround).

Where you can't

No bikes on trails, grassy areas or unpaved roads other than that section of Rapidan Fire Road.

Safety

Federal rules require single-file riding at all times. Move right when safe and pull over when several cars are behind you. Expect steep hills, blind curves, frequent heavy fog and wildlife. Virginia light and brake laws apply, so use lights in fog and in Marys Rock Tunnel. Repair stations are spread through the park.

E-bikes

All e-bike classes are permitted on the routes open to bikes.

Fees

Arriving by bike, you pay the park's individual (per-person) entrance fee, normally valid for 7 days, or ride in on an annual or America the Beautiful pass. Amounts change, so check the park's Fees & Passes page.
