Great Basin National Park

A quiet desert-mountain park: gravel canyon roads, and a scenic drive for the brave.

2/5
Limited riding

Bikes are limited to roads, and the park itself advises against riding its showpiece scenic drive.

Riding here

Great Basin is remote and uncrowded, but its riding is limited. The paved Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive climbs toward 10,000 feet, and while bikes are allowed the park doesn't recommend it because of blind and sometimes icy curves. The packed-gravel Baker Creek, Snake Creek and Strawberry Creek roads are better bets, and the BLM's Sacramento Pass area nearby has mountain bike trails.

Where you can ride

Bikes may use park roads, including the gravel Baker Creek, Snake Creek and Strawberry Creek roads, plus a 0.2-mile trail between Baker and the visitor center.

Where you can't

No riding on any other trail. When park roads are closed to vehicles, they're closed to bikes too.

When to go

The high country is snowbound much of the year; the upper scenic drive typically opens in summer. Late spring and fall work on the lower roads.

Safety

Helmets strongly recommended. Watch for blind and icy curves on the scenic drive, and carry food and water; services are minimal.

E-bikes

The park's own bicycling page doesn't spell out e-bike rules. Under the NPS e-bike rule (36 CFR 4.30), an e-bike with working pedals and a motor under 750 watts is generally allowed where regular bikes are, and riding on the motor alone is barred anywhere cars can't go. Parks can restrict them, so confirm with the park before you bring one.

Fees

No entrance fee. Baker Creek Campground sites 29–32 are walk-in sites that suit cyclists without a vehicle.
