Zion National Park

Ride Zion Canyon with no private cars: the shuttle-season Scenic Drive and the Pa'rus Trail.

5/5
Destination ride

With private cars off Zion Canyon Scenic Drive in shuttle season and the paved Pa'rus Trail, Zion Canyon is one of the best bike rides in the park system.

Riding here

Zion Canyon is made for bikes. In shuttle season private cars are kept off Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, so you ride up the canyon floor under thousand-foot walls with only shuttle buses for company. The paved Pa'rus Trail links the visitor center to Canyon Junction along the Virgin River, and bike racks on the shuttles let you ride one way. Outside the main canyon, Kolob Terrace Road and Kolob Canyons Road are big road climbs.

Where you can ride

Bikes may use the Pa'rus Trail and park roads: Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway, Kolob Canyons Road and Kolob Terrace Road.

Where you can't

All other trails and off-trail routes are closed to bikes, as is the Pa'rus side trail to the Human History Museum. You cannot ride through the Zion–Mt. Carmel Tunnel: arrange a ride in a vehicle (rangers can't do it for you).

Car-free riding

In shuttle season, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles and open to shuttles, cyclists and walkers.

Shuttles and bikes

Regular bikes can ride on the shuttle racks; you lift your bike on and off yourself. E-bikes can't go on the shuttles.

When to go

Spring and fall are ideal. Summer is very hot on the canyon floor, so ride early. Winter riding is possible and quiet.

Closures and restrictions

The Zion–Mt. Carmel Tunnel is closed to bicycles at all times.

Safety

Helmets at all times. Ride single file on the right; groups are limited to six bikes. Take care at Canyon Junction and Weeping Rock, where sight lines are short. Other park roads have steep grades, sharp curves and little or no shoulder. Free repair stations are at Canyon Junction (shuttle stop 3) and The Grotto (stop 6).

E-bikes

Only Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes (assistance stops at 20 mph) are allowed, wherever regular bikes can go. E-bikes are not allowed on the shuttle buses.

Fees

Arriving by bike, you pay the park's individual (per-person) entrance fee, normally valid for 7 days, or ride in on an annual or America the Beautiful pass. Amounts change, so check the park's Fees & Passes page. From 2026, non-US residents aged 16 and over pay an extra $100 per person at this park unless covered by a pass (the non-resident America the Beautiful pass is $250).
